Internet Safety Day

Here it is again… yes it's been a year since we celebrated the first ISD. Last year was a tremendous success and we are expecting an even better response this year. However we still need your help to pass the word.

Our primary goal is for ISD to become a nationally recognized event and this year we received a personal note from President Bush sending greetings to those observing ISD. Although we did not receive an official proclamation from the White House, we are already in contact with our state senators to help our cause in preparation for next year. We have also gained some ISD affiliate supporters that are helping spread the word through their organization contacts.

To further the cause we also felt it was best to develop a separate website dedicated specifically to ISD. This will aid in making the event a stand-alone function as we work for broader recognition. Check it out!

What is Internet Safety Day?
A day to create awareness about Internet Safety. Purposely chosen to coincide with millions of children and teens going back to school and spending more time online. We hope parents will sit with their children for just 30 minutes to learn what they do online and talk to them about Internet Safety.

When is Internet Safety Day?
September 28, 2008

Why are we declaring Internet Safety Day?
From our research we know other countries sponsor their own day to promote Internet Safety but there is no day designated in the United States. With your help we can change this!

How can you help?
Forward this e-mail to your friends and family and ask them to do the same. Your assistance will create awareness and help more families. Contact your local school and government officials. Ask if they will support the effort by making a proclamation for your community.

Why is Internet Safety important?
We can no longer bury our head in the sand and leave our children to fend for themselves concerning online safety. The virtual online world is quite dangerous and our children need adult guidance to maneuver through it.

Even if you feel intimidated by technology and think you can't possibly talk with your child or teenager, YOU REALLY CAN. Half the battle is using parental intuition and common sense. If you observe something they are doing that you are not comfortable with, then speak up. Ask questions - show interest. You might be surprised how they will react to you wanting to know more about their online world.

Want more help? Download a free copy of our official ISD Parent Guide which delivers a crash course on the essential things you need to know. This will help you make your conversation a more positive experience since you will know more about what to ask.

Results from a National Teen Internet survey revealed that parents make a difference in the lives of their children just by talking to them about Internet Safety. Among 1,070 13-17 year olds who were surveyed, 65% who had not discussed safety with their parents had posted where they live online, compared to 48% who had talked "a lot" with their parents. Similarly 68% had posted photos or videos of themselves compared to 59%.*

A different survey of over 4,000 parents found other disturbing news.
"93% felt they knew "some" or "a lot" about where their children go and what they do on the Internet. Yet only 42% of high school students -- and 62% of middle school students stated that they share where they go and what they do on the Internet with their parents..."*
